“All those company have something in common: their model can be replicated everywhere in the word, at the same time and at a very low marginal cost” explains Olivier Younès, affiliate professor at HEC Paris and founder of EXPEN. “This economy of scale strategy, driven by the absence of material contingencies, is at the center of the success of the unicorns. AirBnB became the largest hotel chain without owning a single hotel, Uber is the largest taxi company without owning a single car… This is the power of a scalable model, the possibility to copy/paste the same model, the same functions, and monetizing it on each market”, analyses Olivier Younès.
